THE SIGHTS AROUND THE CITY OF KIEV

On Saturday we had some time to look around the city, and what a beautiful place it is! Kiev has a more western European flair than Kharkov and is located near the center of the country. Kharkov is only about 40 miles from Russia and has more of a Russian influence.

This is a view from our hotel room which is close to the center of the city.

A part of the main square in the city - someone called it Independence Square ( we're not sure if that's the real name or not)

Another part of the big square and surrounding area

A view looking down one of the streets in the center of the city. There are many beautiful buildings in this area.

A beautiful Provaslavic church - every city has many of these ornate edifices

The main church building was enormous and ornately decorated on the inside.

A statue of a war hero, Bogdan, with the church in the background

A beautiful floral clock near the main square

A view of the square and surrounding area from a bridge - you can see the edge of the clock on the right.

A PROPHECY FULFILLED
This is a statue of St. Vladimir who brought Christianity to Ukraine in the 10th century. President Packer stood at the foot of this statue in 1991 and dedicated Ukraine as a land where the gospel would flourish and the church would grow and temples would dot the land.

A view of the Dnieper River which flows through Kiev

Another view of the Dnieper River - from what we read, there is quite a bit of commerce on this river.

Monuments in one of the parks - war, peace, and independence are the themes of most of these statues.

That’s neat about President Packer’s prophecy being fulfilled. And that church and floral clock sure are beautiful. :)

It sounds like the got everything right in the news cast about the temple in Ukaine. So did you guys shake Pres. Monson’s hand? That’s pretty neat to be so close to him.
